Sigra Stadium Upgrades Nearing Completion: Kashi Set to Host National Boxing Championship

The transformation of Varanasi's historic Sigra Stadium into a modern multi-sports complex is in its final phase. State sports authorities confirmed that Kashi will host the upcoming National Sub-Junior Boxing Championship next month.

Varanasi is all set to emerge as a major sporting hub in eastern Uttar Pradesh as the redevelopment of the Dr. Sampurnanand Sports Stadium in Sigra nears completion. Funded under the Smart City project and supported by the Yogi Adityanath government, the state-of-the-art facility features a FIFA-standard synthetic turf, an all-weather indoor swimming pool, and modern gymnasiums. Regional Sports Officer R.P. Singh stated that the infrastructure meets international standards and will provide local athletes with unmatched training facilities.

Preparations are already underway to host the prestigious National Sub-Junior Boxing Championship at the indoor arena by next month. Coaches and sports enthusiasts in Varanasi have welcomed the development, noting that young talent from rural Purvanchal districts like Chandauli, Ghazipur, and Mirzapur will now have direct access to professional platforms without needing to travel to Lucknow or New Delhi.

The district administration is also reviewing logistics, security, and accommodation arrangements for hundreds of athletes and officials expected to arrive from across the country. Local sports academies report a massive surge in registrations, signaling a renewed enthusiasm for competitive sports in the ancient cultural capital.
