GI-Tagged Banarasi Sarees Witness 40% Surge in Exports Ahead of Wedding Season

Traditional handloom weavers in Varanasi are experiencing a massive boom in international orders, driven by robust demand from the US, UAE, and European markets ahead of the peak festive and wedding season.

The iconic handloom industry of Varanasi is riding high on a wave of unprecedented global demand, registering a staggering 40% year-on-year surge in exports of GI-tagged Banarasi sarees and silk brocades. Weavers in clusters like Madanpura, Lallapura, and Puranapul are working round the clock to fulfill bulk orders originating from the diaspora and high-end fashion houses in New York, London, and Dubai.

District Industries Centre officials attribute this resurgence to aggressive marketing campaigns by the Yogi Adityanath government, including special financial assistance schemes, upgraded common facility centers, and robust participation in international trade expos. Furthermore, the implementation of the Geographical Indication (GI) tag has effectively safeguarded authentic Banarasi silk against cheap powerloom knock-offs, assuring global buyers of uncompromised purity and traditional craftsmanship.

Master weaver Haji Ishtiyaq Ahmed noted, 'The revival of traditional motifs and incorporation of lightweight organza silk has appealed immensely to the modern global bride. Government initiatives like ODF (One District, One Product) have given our multigenerational art a much-needed contemporary platform.' With domestic weddings also generating heavy local footfall at wholesale hubs like Chowk and Golghar, the local silk economy is projected to cross record revenue milestones this fiscal year.
