Kashi's Ghats Echo with Classical Melodies: 5-Day 'Mahotsav of Banaras' Kicks Off at Assi Ghat
The legendary musical heritage of Varanasi took center stage this evening as the annual 'Mahotsav of Banaras' inaugurated near the holy banks of Assi Ghat. Renowned maestros and young prodigies from across Uttar Pradesh have gathered to pay homage to the city's rich *Gharana* traditions.
Varanasi's cultural pulse beat faster on Tuesday evening as the much-awaited 'Mahotsav of Banaras' grandly commenced at Assi Ghat. Illuminated by thousands of earthen lamps and the soft glow of festive lights, the historic stone steps transformed into an open-air amphitheatre where classical vocalists, sitar players, and Kathak dancers captivated thousands of locals and foreign tourists alike.
The inaugural evening witnessed a mesmerizing Shehnai recital by disciples of Bharat Ratna late Ustad Bismillah Khan, echoing the timeless tunes of Kashi over the gentle ripples of the Ganga. Uttar Pradesh Minister for Culture and Tourism, Jaiveer Singh, who graced the event as chief guest, announced that the state government is establishing a dedicated digital archive in Varanasi to preserve rare audio recordings of Purvanchal's folk and classical legends.
Local artisans, handloom weavers, and culinary experts have also set up stalls along the riverfront corridor, showcasing Banarasi silk sarees and traditional delicacies like *Malaiyyo* and *Tamatar Chaat*. The five-day festival will feature daily performances culminating in a grand Sufi and Qawwali night at the historic Chet Singh Fort, promising an unforgettable celebration of art and heritage.
