Melodic Tribute to Pandit Ravi Shankar mesmerizes audience at Sankat Mochan Temple Premises
Classical music enthusiasts packed the holy courtyard of Sankat Mochan Temple for a special commemorative concert honoring Sitar maestro Bharat Ratna Pandit Ravi Shankar, featuring performances by his eminent disciples.
The sacred courtyard of the historic Sankat Mochan Temple—traditionally known for its vibrant Hanuman Jayanti music festival—hosted an emotionally charged evening of classical instrumental music dedicated to the legendary Sitar exponent Pandit Ravi Shankar. Born in Varanasi, the maestro's profound spiritual connection to the city was celebrated through exquisite renditions by his senior disciples and contemporary sitar virtuosos.
The concert opened with an early evening Raag Yaman that seamlessly blended meditative depth with sparkling taans, perfectly harmonizing with the evening temple bells and devotional chants. Prominent vocalist Pandit Chhannulal Mishra, who attended as the guest of honor, remarked that Varanasi's musical soul remains eternally intertwined with the legacy of its great masters.
Organizers noted that such intimate musical gatherings serve as a bridge between Varanasi's spiritual asceticism and its rich secular artistic traditions. Visitors from Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata traveled specifically to witness the concert, reiterating Kashi's status as the undisputed cultural capital of North India.
