Centuries-old Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat adopts eco-friendly green protocols

The world-famous daily Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat has introduced sustainable practices, replacing plastic elements with biodegradable floral wastes and organic materials.

The iconic, centuries-old daily Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, organized by the Ganga Seva Nidhi, has taken a definitive stride toward environmental sustainability. In alignment with the Namami Gange mission, the management committee has transitioned to entirely eco-friendly protocols, ensuring that floral offerings, incense, and floating lit containers do not harm the aquatic ecosystem of Mother Ganga.

Priests conducting the synchronized, majestic ritual now utilize organic, zero-plastic ingredients for worship. Discarded flowers collected from the aarti and surrounding temples are systematically transported to self-help groups, where women artisans repurpose them into organic incense sticks, natural gulal, and handmade compost, preventing any direct dumping into the river.

Foreign tourists, scholars, and spiritual seekers visiting Dashashwamedh Ghat have appreciated this thoughtful balance between ancient Vedic traditions and modern ecological stewardship. The Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board has lauded the initiative, recommending its adoption across other prominent riverfront shrines in Mirzapur, Prayagraj, and Kanpur.
