Heritage Walks Meet Holistic Wellness: Ayush Ministry Promotes Traditional Yoga Therapy Along Ganga Ghats
The Ministry of AYUSH, in collaboration with the Varanasi district administration, has rolled out structured open-air therapeutic yoga sessions along Assi and Dashashwamedh Ghats to manage lifestyle disorders among senior citizens.
Blending Kashi's ancient spiritual heritage with modern preventive medicine, the regional AYUSH department has launched a specialized wellness initiative titled 'Arogya Ganga'. Under this program, certified yoga instructors and naturopathy experts are conducting daily sunrise therapy sessions along the steps of Assi, Tulsi, and Dashashwamedh Ghats. The initiative specifically targets chronic lifestyle disorders such as hypertension, type-2 diabetes, and arthritic stiffness among the elderly population of Varanasi.
Dr. R.K. Singh, regional Ayurvedic officer, highlighted that the ionized breeze from the sacred river combined with synchronized *pranayama* offers profound physiological and psychological benefits. “We are witnessing a tremendous surge in participants, ranging from local residents to spiritual tourists seeking holistic healing,” remarked Dr. Singh. Medical camps are also stationed adjacent to the yoga venues, offering complimentary blood pressure monitoring, blood sugar testing, and personalized herbal consultations.
The local municipal corporation has extended support by installing drinking water kiosks, rubberized anti-slip mats, and adequate lighting to ensure safety during the early morning sessions. The state government plans to replicate this model across other riverside towns in Uttar Pradesh, establishing Varanasi as the epicenter of traditional wellness tourism and preventive community healthcare.
