Varanasi Civil Hospital Upgrades Blood Bank with Fully Automated Component Separation Unit

The Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya District Hospital has commissioned a cutting-edge blood component separation machine, ensuring localized access to packed red cells, platelets, and plasma for dengue and trauma patients.

In a significant upgrade to public healthcare infrastructure, the blood bank at Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (Pandeypur) District Hospital has been equipped with a fully automated blood component separation unit. Previously, patients requiring specific components like single-donor platelets (SDP) or fresh frozen plasma (FFP) had to rely on private blood banks or referral centers in the city core, often leading to critical delays during medical emergencies.

Chief Medical Superintendent Dr. Rajesh Kumar explained that the new centrifuge equipment allows a single unit of whole blood to be split into packed red blood cells, platelets, plasma, and cryoprecipitate. “This maximizes the utility of every donation and directly targets the exact clinical requirement of the patient, minimizing fluid overload risks,” said Dr. Kumar. The upgrade is particularly timely given the cyclical rise in platelet-consuming viral fevers during the transitional weather months in Purvanchal.

The district hospital has also launched a digital inventory tracking system linked with the state's 'e-Raktkosh' portal, allowing citizens to check real-time blood group availability online. Voluntary blood donation camps are being organized across academic institutions and corporate offices in Varanasi to maintain robust reserves ahead of the festive season.
